Question 4:
There's some great stuff here Mark, and I would make similar comments to those made for Laura. You need to work on presenting this in a more varied and multi media way, breaking it up visually. Your comments on genre are problematic though as you refer to a genre called 'love' - I think you mean Romance (it needs to be stated as such to be a recognisable genre), but you need to make much more of the fact that your film subverts the conventions of romance (in fact it's not really a romance at all), and instead this is combined with the style and themes and issues of social realism. This needs lots more discussion - about 3x more with illustration. ~Narrative and genre both need supporting theory too, and you need to go back to the work we did in the transition. More is needed on the challenging and controversial nature of your film with comparisons and discussion about the intended effects of such a film for the audience. Consider the reception of this film. On audience, you need to define your audience and then explain how you got feedback and what you did with it. More specific detail is needed here.
ReplyDeleteYour prezi needs quite a lot of work to bring it up to level 4. You need many more stopping points - have a look at the level 4 examples from last year linked from my blog roll (bottom of page) and I think you'll see that there are about 40 stops! As with the other elements of the evaluation, this must also be multi media for higher marks, with lots of variety and tangents, making it truly organic and 3D (that's the advantage of prezi) - you need to move away from a powerpoint style of points, whereby you are summarising and in generalised terms. The points need much more development and detail with explanation, example and more visuals or film links. The point of this is to evaluate the usefulness of these technologies and your competence with them, so remember to do this in depth at every opportunity. For example, when you discuss the transitions in camera, you need to explain precisely what kind of transitions you mean (and normally, this kind of discussion would need to go with the editing discussion - I'm not sure why you discuss it under camera?). Transitions come in all shapes and types, with specific terms and techniques and functions, and you need to illustrate your problem and solution. This discussion alone should really be at least 4 stops on your prezi, with much more precise use of terms and examples. The film on final cut is a good explanation, but you really ought to have more on editing with screengrabs showing the transitions and some of the post production effects you created. You need to aim to do your work more justice in terms of specific achievements.
ReplyDeleteQn 3 on audience feedback needs loads more and I suspect you're intending this. Your group worked hard on communicating with your audience throughout, and used terrific techniques like the vlog, the use of twitter and facebook. This needs careful illustration from throughout the process, with evidence of feedback or comments, and especially, to answer the question, you need to say how this feedback informed your process, decisions, choices and product overall. You should be thinking in terms of form, narrative, layout, mode of address, character, themes, issues, ideologies. Lots to do here to bring this section up to level 4.
ReplyDeleteOn question 1 - you need more theory references - you mention Todorov, but this needs more accuracy and specificity to your product, but you also should try to mention other theorists eg Levi Strauss. Don't forget Barthes on Enigma, or the terms plot and story. These should all be referred to. This post needs substantial illustration, which I'm sure you were intending to add, but just to confirm, this is really vital. In terms of your discussion of genre/style, you need much more evidence that you are knowledgeable about social realism and its techniques and intentions, as well as possible thriller elements. You need to refer to Neale and Altman on film and genre, and you need to explain how short films are different in their use of genre codes and conventions due to length but also target audience and lack of institutional constraints
