Breaking the 180 degree rule...on purpose! - Laura

In the fourth flashback, there is a final confrontation which is where Amy hits Sam with a frying pan, so we finally see the real abuse happening which we have been suspecting all along. This is also where we find out why Sam has the bruise on his face, even though he lied to his friends about it. So in this scene we wanted to try and create a fast pace as we needed to reflect this violence, and the suspense it creates for the audience. To do this, we broke the 180 degree rule. Though this is not conventionally broken, in this film we made the decision to break it as we felt that it made the audience confused, heightening the tension. Furthermore, by doing the shot from this angle it meant we could not actually see Sam being hit, which we didn't want as we felt it would look to cliched. This way we could rely on the audio where Sam is pleading with Amy to stop, as by having the diegetic sound for an off-screen visual it makes it even more sinister. Alternatively, as we are not professional actors, we could not find a way to make the acting serious enough to portray the issue, and also we did not actually want to hit Mark with the frying pan.
